Follow a redirect chain

Some links forward through several intermediate stops before you reach the destination. This tool follows the whole chain step by step and shows every redirect with its status code.

Some links forward through several intermediate stops before you reach the destination. This tool follows the whole chain step by step and shows every redirect with its status code.

What this tool does

The tool fetches the link through a secure proxy and records every redirect. It warns about an insecure step from https to http, too many hops, a loop and when you end on a different domain.

How to use it

Enter the starting link and run the check. Handy for shortened links and marketing URLs to see where you really end up.

Input and output

  • Input: a starting link or shortened URL
  • Output: every step in the chain with status code and the final address, plus warnings

Limitations

Fetching runs through a server proxy; links that only forward after a click or with JavaScript are not followed.

Good to know

Every extra hop costs speed and trust, and a step from https to http breaks the security of the whole chain. If you land on an unexpected domain, be careful, because that is a classic phishing pattern.
